Understanding Oil Oxidation in Diesel Engines

heat in diesel engine

Oxidation of oil is caused by the presence of air (oxygen) and heat. Carboxylic acids form when atmospheric oxygen reacts with the hydrocarbons in the lubricant. Such acids are weak, but they gradually gain a concentration high enough to cause serious corrosion of machinery parts. This is an inevitable activity that requires monitoring.

Modern diesel engine hardware runs at higher temperatures, putting more stress on engine lubricants. Performance requirements for the API CK-4 diesel engine oil category call for a more robust oil formulation. This protects against oxidation.

The Volvo T-13 test began pushing boundaries of oxidation stability. The actual test method evaluates a lubricant’s performance to protect against oil oxidation and resulting bearing corrosion.

The test simulation runs at high temperatures. It uses a heavy-duty, turbocharged, and intercooled diesel engine. This engine operates on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. The test evaluates the oil's ability to resist oxidation based on pass/fail criteria.

FS Suprex Gold ESP is formulated with high quality base oils and state-of-the-art additives providing superior oxidation resistance. Through industry testing conducted as part of the transition to API CK-4, FS Suprex Gold ESP exhibited a 45% improvement in oxidative stability over the specification limit and 700% better protection against increased viscosity as set forth in the Volvo T-13 test.

How can you know if oxidation of your diesel engine oil is occurring? Ask your local FS Energy Specialist about our Used Oil Analysis Program.

Fluid analysis makes it possible to literally look inside an engine, transmission, or hydraulic system. By monitoring the fluid, its condition and the presence of contaminates, a fluid analysis user can anticipate problems, monitor system wear, and repair problems before they become catastrophic.

If you are interested in seeing how your oil is performing or determining if you can safely extend drain intervals, talk to your local FS Energy Specialist today.
